Professional Background
I am a speech-language pathologist specializing in Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC). After working in the public schools for 20 years, I left to explore new opportunities in the field of AAC. I consider myself an educator and advocate for supporting students with complex communication needs within inclusive school settings. I am one of the founders of the #TalkingAAC conference, and I joke that it is my fourth child. After my career in the schools, I began working for AssistiveWare as an independent contractor, focusing on supporting school implementation and product development. I consider myself both an educator and a life-long learner. I enjoy traveling to teach others about AAC principles, but I am constantly growing and learning new things.
Passion for AAC
It’s really simple: I believe everyone has the right to communicate. We have the responsibility to provide the tools, support, and opportunities that allow everyone the ability to realize their communication potential. It takes some thoughtful practice to ensure we are helping people learn the power of language to create their own personal message. This is the work of AAC!
Fun Fact
I’m a mom of three teenagers and two Boston Terriers. You might say I talk a lot, so I’m fortunate to be married to a patient listener. I recently learned to crochet as a way to limit my mindless scrolling. You can find me watching reruns of New Girl, Modern Family, The Office, Friends, etc while I crochet. Something funny and lighthearted to listen to, but I don’t have to pay attention too closely.
