Dr. Karen Erickson - Center for Literacy and Disability Studies - UNC Chapel Hill
Enhancing Comprehensive Literacy Instruction with Targeted Interventions
Karen directs the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies where she first started working with Dr. Koppenhaver nearly 30 years ago. She will provide an overview of comprehensive, conventional literacy instruction with specific attention to strategies that build reading, writing, and communication skills. Join Karen as she also shares strategies to help educators, therapists, and families target areas of need once comprehensive instruction is in place.
Kim Rankin - Parent & Educator
Comprehensive Literacy Instruction at Home: A Solution Not Solely for Homeschoolers
Kim attended Drs. Erickson and Koppenhaver's three-day workshop on Comprehensive Conventional Literacy in March 2019 seeking insight in supporting her then six-year old son's literacy development in their homeschool environment. Nathaniel is non-speaking and uses AAC. The strategies she learned at the conference drastically changed their educational journey. Kim will share a few insights from their experience and provide an observation of three families who are not homeschooling, but implementing comprehensive literacy strategies at home to supplement school provided instruction.
