Deidre Dobbels
BOARD MEMBER - Communications Committee Member
Professional Background
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist with over 20 years of experience working with children and adults with complex communication needs currently working as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University, College of Health and Human Sciences. In this role I mentor graduate students through supervised clinical experiences with clients who use or may benefit from AAC, as well as teaching clinical education courses, coordinating the on-campus clinic, and setting up externships for students in their final semesters. Prior to my appointment at NIU, I worked in Illinois public schools with students aged 3-22, leading AAC and assistive technology endeavors in several suburban Chicago school districts.
Passion for AAC
While AAC technology, access and implementation of best practices have skyrocketed in the last decade, there are still so many practitioners, families, school districts, and communicators seeking support, resources and information. My passion for #TalkingAAC stems from its mission to provide high quality professional development to all stakeholders, to grow the community and support all people - regardless of where they are in their AAC process.
Fun Fact
While not full-time Michiganders - my family, including my spouse, two teenage sons, and a lake loving labrador try to get to Michigan as much as possible.
